The are no real short cuts to great inventions – it’s hard work, perseverance and a lot of duff ideas along the way. However, having good sources of information around to inform and inspire help a great deal and being organised about what you learn and discover will serve you well.
Inventor’s notebook: Reference journal
We’ve produced this notebook which contains plenty of space to organise and document all your ideas, projects and creations with lined pages, graph paper, log charts, squared paper, isometric drawing pages, todo lists, an any-year planner and an index page at the front.
Alongside this, it is packed with useful reference material including electronics and software principles, cheat sheets, guides and conversion factors, all interspersed with inspiring quotes from inventors, scientists and business leaders.

The Impatient Inventor reference cards have a wealth of information on them useful to inventors – ranging from electronics to software.
They are clearly laid out in an informal style with easy-to-read descriptions and diagrams in a handy size for your pocket – slightly bigger than a pack of playing cards so we could fit everything on them!
The full pack consists of 40 high-quality 95mm x 152mm full colour printed cards which are in five groups of eight cards. The colour-code groups are:
COMPONENTS: All the details you need for recognising and using common electronic components, from their schematic symbol to typical package types, example circuits and how to calculate the parameters need to use them effectively.
SIGNALS: Descriptions and diagrams of useful signal types used in electronics, e.g. PWM, serial, I2C.
TOOLBOX: Really useful information that inventors need to keep to hand when building their invention such as how to solder, how to use a multimeter and other useful equipment such as batteries and speakers.
REFERENCE: For those things that you need to look up regularly such as resistor colour codes, hexadecimal and binary and calulating a potential divider.
SOFTWARE: References for writing software in C and C++, with examples mainly on the Arduino platform, but can be used anywhere.
